“It was great fun for Laura to con me out of retirement and get me to partner up with her on this,” says Mike Sawri.
“What do you mean? I’m a good partner!” replies Laura Huisman.
Business partners Laura and Mike operate The Winkin' Owl in the same manner that they interact with each other: casually and in good fun. When Mike suggests that the pair is like an old married couple, Laura is quick to respond with a laugh, “Yeah, but with only the bad stuff.”
The two have known each other since 2003, when Laura worked in one of Mike’s other pubs, where she rose to general management. Mike eventually retired, but in 2010 Laura approached him with her idea of re-establishing their partnership and purchasing the St. Georgian Dragon, returning it to its original name, The Winkin' Owl. “It had been owned by this wonderful Italian fellow,” Laura says. “When he sold it, everything was changed. We wanted to bring back The Owl and the atmosphere with it.”

Ever since the new owner took over, the service and quality of food has gone down hill. I was a regular customer for 12 years and will not be returning. They ran out of beer, 1 hour for a wing order on wing night is not appealing. They only had two servers on and it took 15 minutes with 6 tables filled to get a menu. Save your money.
I lived in the Deer Valley area of Calgary for several years and this pub became a regular spot for me to meet with friends for a drink annd a bite to eat, watch a game, play pool, etc. The staff is great, the prices are very reasonable and this is a nice, open concept pub. Relaxing, casual, and friendly - everything you can ask for.
