In the early 1840s, John Fulton and his two brothers came to Canada from Scotland to start a new life. “Since they arrived pre-confederation, there is no record of their landing," explains Shirley Deugo, a 4th generation Fulton descendant. "So we have this funny family story that when the boat arrived in Halifax they just jumped off, swam to shore and disappeared into the woods!”
Even if the Fulton family’s arrival to Canada is a mystery, the story of their subsequent adventures and enterprises in their new homeland over the next century and a half are well recorded. The Fulton family are local celebrities when it comes to the classic Canadian spring art of making maple syrup. Today, the family owned and operated business Fulton's Pancake House & Sugar Bush draws international tourists and locals alike for a taste of this unique Canadian flavour, steeped in a rich family history.
